APG IT Manager Markus Kasinger wins prestigious CIO Award

Award for achievements to support the energy transition while maintaining a secure power supply

The head of IT at Austrian Power Grid (APG), Markus Kasinger, is the CIO AWARD winner in 2023. This prestigious award was presented by the IT manager community Confare as part of the Confare#CIOAWARD.

The award was presented to Kasinger for his IT work to secure the power supply in Austria. Kasinger and his team face the challenge of facilitating the energy transition with their IT services, while at the same time ensuring a secure power supply through strong cybersecurity. The digital support comprises a broad range of services, from a highly available, resilient IT infrastructure to the operation of an in-house Security Operation Center, or the active support of the energy transition in conjunction with the specialists of Applications and Data Science. In this context, information technology is an indispensable complementary discipline to electrical engineering.

The dynamic digitalization of APG is the basis for ensuring that the security of electricity supply in Austria remains stable also in the future. As Austria’s TSO APG, has to make sure that power supply and consumption are in balance at all times. This requires, among other things, precise forecasts and IT simulations.

Kasinger, who has been the Head of the IT Department at APG since 2019, is not only very pleased about the award, but makes sure to also express his gratitude toward his colleagues: "My team is highly competent and highly motivated. Only together can we succeed in further developing one of the country's most important IT functions." APG’s managing directors Gerhard Christiner and Thomas Karall: “Only a strong team can guarantee a secure power supply in Austria. APG is proud that one of the leading figures in our team is the winner of this award. Our congratulations to Markus Kasinger.”

As independent transmission system operator Austrian Power Grid (APG) is in charge of ensuring the security of electricity supply in Austria. With our high-performance and digital electricity infrastructure and the use of state-of-the-art technologies we integrate renewable energies, we are the platform for the electricity market, and we provide access to reasonably priced electricity for Austria’s consumers and thus create the basis for Austria as supply-secure industrial and business location and place to live. The APG grid totals a length of about 3,400 km and is operated, maintained and continuously adapted to the increasing challenges of the electrification of businesses, industry and society by a team of approximately 733 specialists. Also in 2022 Austria had a security of supply of 99.99 percent and thus ranks among the top countries worldwide. Our investments of 490 million euros in 2023 (2022: 370 million euros) are a motor for the Austrian economy and a crucial factor in reaching Austria’s climate and energy targets. Until 2032 APG will invest a total of approximately 3.5 billion euros in grid expansion and renovation projects, which amounts to approximately 19 percent of the total of 18 billion euros which the energy industry will invest in the grid infrastructure over the next ten years.
