Research & innovation supports safe transformation of the energy system

In Austria, 100% of electricity consumption is to be covered by domestic renewable energy sources by 2030. A further ten years later, the entire Austrian energy system, which includes heat generation and transport in addition to electricity, is to be operated in a climate-neutral manner. The growing share of volatile renewable energy sources, sector coupling and the increasingly integrated European electricity market pose new challenges for transmission system operators that require new answers.

Research and innovation projects aim to provide these answers and bring about necessary changes to continue to ensure security of supply, cost efficiency and direct added value for the grid user. The initiatives address the following R&I dimensions:

  • Optimisation of the existing grid: Optimal grid operation is to be guaranteed through the targeted use of new technologies.

  • New flexibility: For the successful integration of renewable energy sources, the customer should be more strongly integrated into the electricity system.

  • Grid expansion: New infrastructure must be created for the comprehensive integration of renewable energy sources and the convergence with other sectors.
