Grid reinforcement east
The new 380 kV connection between Trumau (Lower Austria) and Zurndorf (Burgenland) will massively reinforce the extra-high voltage level in APG's transmission grid in eastern Austria. This reinforcement of the eastern grid is also important to ensure a secure supply of electricity throughout Austria. It plays a central role in the success of the secure energy transition and the decarbonization of the economy and society.
The new connection in the eastern region for the secure energy transition and increased integration of renewable energy
The climate targets set by Austria are leading to a massive expansion of wind power and photovoltaics in eastern Austria. In order to transport this energy to consumers throughout Austria, the transmission grid in eastern Lower Austria and northern Burgenland needs to be strengthened. This important grid expansion project is also anchored in the current integrated Austrian grid infrastructure plan (ÖNIP 2024). The connection between Trumau (Lower Austria) and Zurndorf (Burgenland) will significantly strengthen the 380 kV grid over a length of around 60 km: an important building block for the secure energy transition throughout Austria.
The grid reinforcement east consists of the construction and conversion of overhead line infrastructure, most of which will run directly next to or in place of existing lines. The project also requires the construction and conversion of substations.</p

Start of subsoil investigations
Austrian Power Grid (APG) starts on-site ground investigations in November as part of the Grid Reinforcement East project. The background to this is the planned construction and expansion of the 380 kV transmission grid in Lower Austria and Burgenland. The Grid Reinforcement East project comprises the conversion and new construction of a 380 kV overhead line in eastern Lower Austria and northern Burgenland, between Trumau (Lower Austria) and Zurndorf (Burgenland). A new high-performance connection is being planned over a length of just over 60 kilometers. The construction, expansion and conversion of local substations is also planned. In Burgenland, the project will be carried out in cooperation with Netz Burgenland and adjustments will be made to the 110 kV distribution grid. The new 380 kV line, most of which will run alongside or instead of existing lines, will increase the reliability of the region's electricity supply.
In order to be able to plan the project in detail, APG employees and experts commissioned by APG will be carrying out ground investigations on properties in the affected municipalities - in the districts of Baden, Mödling, Bruck an der Leitha and Neusiedl am See - over the coming months. The sole purpose of this work is to explore the conditions for an optimal route. The exploration campaign consisting of 22 core drillings and 40 excavator trenches with dynamic probing will start in November and is expected to last until the end of February 2026. The affected municipalities and property owners have already been personally informed about the work.
