Positive decision for the general renewal of the Jauntal pipeline

The general renewal of the Jauntal line between Schwabeck and Obersielach in Jauntal/Carinthia has been approved in accordance with the Carinthian Electricity Act.

The general renewal of the Jauntal line between the APG substations Schwabeck and Obersielach (Carinthia/Jauntal) has been approved by the Carinthian provincial government in accordance with the Carinthian Electricity Act (K-EG). APG is investing around EUR 70 million in the general renewal of the 110-kilovolt line through the Carinthian Jauntal (districts of Völkermarkt and Wolfsberg). This will increase the line capacity by around 300%. The increase in capacity lays the foundation for ensuring a secure supply of electricity and a sustainable energy future for a strong region in the long term. The general renewal of the 19 km-long line will be implemented from 2026 to 2028.

Carinthian provincial government grants permit under heavy current law

After the authority had reviewed the submission documents, an oral hearing was held on 27 February 2025. The hearing in accordance with the Carinthian Electricity Act took place in Ruden (district of Völkermarkt). By decision dated March 14, 2025, the Carinthian provincial government granted approval for the general renewal of the power line. This decision has now become legally binding following the expiry of the appeal period. The other material approval procedures have been processed by the relevant authorities and are also positive - with the exception of the outstanding approvals in the areas of forestry and aviation.

Jauntal line becomes fit for the future

The guarantee of security of supply, the availability of sustainable electricity and the integration of renewable energy in the region require a high-performance electricity grid. In addition, the current developments in electricity and energy prices show how important it is to achieve a rapid and secure transformation towards a sustainable energy system. This requires corresponding capacities in the areas of grids, storage and production as well as comprehensive digitalization to utilize the flexibility of all players in the system. With the general renewal of the 110 kV line between the Schwabeck substation (UW) and the Obersielach UW, which was partially commissioned in the 1940s, APG is providing the necessary capacities for the future and ensuring a secure and sustainable electricity supply in the Jauntal region. Currently, a current of 640 amperes (A) can be transported per line system. After the renewal, this line capacity will increase to 2,500 A per system, i.e. by around 300 percent.  The general renewal of the Jauntal line will be implemented from 2026 to 2028.

General renewal of all components

In the course of the general renewal, all outdated components, i.e. pylons, foundations, cables, earthing and fittings, will be adapted to the state of the art. The existing single cable will be replaced by a so-called double bundle, which will increase the transmission capacity of the approximately 19-kilometer-long line. The route will remain identical during the general renewal, as will the voltage level of 110 kilovolts. The new pylons, 76 in number, will be erected at the same location. Depending on the location and necessity, they will be raised by up to 15 meters. This will ensure that there is no deterioration in terms of electric and magnetic fields in residential properties compared to the existing line. In addition, the clearance height for agricultural vehicles will also be optimized. The renewal of the Jauntal line is part of APG's investment programme up to 2034 (Grid Development Plan 2023) amounting to 9 billion for the success of the secure energy transition in Austria and a key project for the region. Further project information at: General renewal of the Jauntal line - Austria needs electricity

About Austrian Power Grid (APG)

As an independent transmission system operator, Austrian Power Grid (APG) is responsible for the secure supply of electricity in Austria. With our high-performance and digital electricity infrastructure and the use of state-of-the-art technologies, we integrate renewable energies and thus reduce import dependency, act as a platform for the electricity market, create access to affordable electricity and thus form the basis for a secure supply and sustainable business and living location. The APG grid extends over a route length of around 3,500 km, which the company operates and maintains with a team of around 1,000 specialists and continuously adapts to the increasing requirements of the electrification of society, business and industry. The majority of the 67 substations distributed throughout Austria are operated remotely from the control center in Vienna. Thanks to our dedicated employees, security of supply remained at 99.99% in 2024, putting us at the top of the global field. Our investments totaling EUR 640 million in 2025 (2024: EUR 440 million, 2023: EUR 490 million) are an economic driver and a key component in achieving Austria's energy targets. APG will invest a total of around 9 billion euros in grid expansion and conversion by 2034.
