Matrei substation

APG and TINETZ are constructing the new 380/110 kV Matrei substation at a cost of EUR 48 million to supply the Iseltal valley in East Tyrol. The plant will be an important second connection to the Austria-wide transmission grid and will significantly increase the security of supply for the entire region.

Milestone 24.07.2025

New Matrei substation from APG and TINETZ is in operation

Electricity has been flowing at the Matrei substation since 23.07.2025. Austrian Power Grid AG (APG) and TINETZ-Tiroler Netze GmbH (TINETZ) have built a 380 kV switchgear, a 110 kV switchgear and a 380/110 kV transformer that connects the two grid levels for a total of 46.5 million euros: for a sustainably secure power supply in the Iseltal valley and throughout East Tyrol. In addition to the Lienz substation, the system creates a second connection between the Tyrolean 110 kV grid and the Austria-wide APG grid, thereby significantly increasing reliability in the region. In addition, the surplus electricity generated in Iseltal from small-scale hydropower and photovoltaics can be better transported - the project is therefore also an important piece of the puzzle for the secure energy transition in Tyrol and Austria.

All details on the commissioning of the new Matrei substation can be found here.

Milestone 02.04.2025

Milestone for a secure power supply in East Tyrol: 380/110 kV transformer has reached Matrei substation

The 380/110 kV transformer was successfully delivered to its new "workplace" late yesterday night as part of an impressive heavy haul. Hundreds of interested spectators followed the spectacle along the entire route until the very end. The exact time of arrival was 01:30 a.m.

With a capacity of 200 megavolt amperes (MVA), it will connect the Austria-wide APG grid with the regional distribution grid of TINETZ from summer 2025 and thus make the electricity supply in East Tyrol much more secure.

Update 28.03.2025

Loading & removal

This 200 MVA transformer served the wind power in Burgenland well until it had to be replaced by a more powerful one with an output of 300 MVA. It is now on its way to its next "workplace" in the new Matrei substation in East Tyrol, where exactly this capacity is needed to create a second feed-in point for the region to the Austria-wide APG grid. This will increase local security of supply and transport unused electricity from hydropower and solar energy to where it is needed.

The last stage will be adventurous - stay tuned!

Update 17.03.2025

Due to heavy transport: Temporary detour and traffic disruptions between Lienz and Matrei

In the night from April 1 to 2, 2025: APG transports centerpiece to new substation

The electricity grid operators Austrian Power Grid (APG) and TINETZ are currently building the new 380/110-kV substation Matrei in East Tyrol. During the night of April 1 to 2, the heart of the substation, a 380/110 kV transformer weighing 236 tons, will be delivered. In future, this will connect the Austria-wide APG grid with the regional distribution grid of TINETZ, which will significantly improve the power supply to the Iseltal valley and the whole of East Tyrol. There will be a temporary detour and traffic disruptions on the transport route.

Route:
From the Lienz substation in Nußdorf/Debant via the B100 to Lienz, through the city of Lienz and on via the B108 to Matrei/Seblas.

Time period:
01.04., approx. 19:00 to 02.04., approx. 05:00

Routes and closures:

  • Traffic will be temporarily diverted from the B100 between St. Johann and Huben via the Kienburger Landesstraße.
  • Temporary complete closure of the B108 for a few minutes to set up and dismantle a flyover in the area of the Leibnitzbachbrücke bridge, the 10 p.m. shift change at the Liebherr company in Lienz will take place. Liebherr in Lienz will be taken into account in the scheduling.

APG is making every effort to route traffic past the heavy goods transport along the entire route in order to keep traffic disruption to a minimum.

Update 25.04.2024

Construction work picks up speed

Austrian Power Grid (APG), operator of the Austria-wide high-voltage grid, and the regional distribution system operator TINETZ are building a new 380/110 kV substation (UW) in Matrei-Seblas for 46.5 million euros: From summer 2025, the facility will connect TINETZ's 110 kV power line through the Iseltal valley directly to APG's 380 kV grid, thereby significantly increasing local supply and outage security. The surplus green electricity generated there from small-scale hydropower and photovoltaics can also be better transported in future. The region as a whole will also benefit from the new APG site, as East Tyrol is currently only connected to the national grid via the Lienz substation. TINETZ already began construction work on the new Matrei substation in the fall of 2023, and work on the APG site is now also picking up speed.
