The common grid model is used for effective forecasts and snapshots of the paneuropean electrical transmission grid. It is used for operational planning, network security calculations and capacity calculations for cross border electricity markets.
The legal basis for the creation of the common grid model is defined in several network codes, which were developed by TSOs during the implementation of European Union's Third Energy Package. The network codes in turn mandate the creation of methodologies providing details where necessary. Particularily,
the following are relevant for the creation of the Common Grid Model:
- Common Grid Model Methodology (CGMM)
- Generation and Load Data Provision Methodology (GLDPM)
The CGMM defines relevant scenarios and the contents of the Common Grid Model. The GLDPM details what kind of data TSOs need from market participants in order to create their national, individual grid models, which are then merged with individual grid models of other TSOs to form the Common Grid Model.
The Guideline on Capacity Allocation and Congestion Management (GL CACM, Commission Regulation (EU) 2015/1222) and the Guideline on Forward Capacity Allocation (GL FCA, Commission Regulation (EU) 2016/1719) obligate APG to publish the aforementioned methodologies.
