Austrian and European electricity market
At present, most electricity is traded directly between generators and consumers (OTC trading). However, power exchanges – in which generators, traders and consumers submit generation and demand bids – are on the rise. Power exchanges offer neutral, non-discriminatory access to all market participants and guarantee transparent, market-compliant pricing. The European Union’s Third Energy Package laid the foundation for an internal energy market in Europe in which electricity can be traded across borders. The Third Energy Package aims to create a transparent, discrimination-free electricity market across Europe for the equal benefit of both producers and consumers.
