Intraday Capacities

APG carries the responsibility for the awarding of intraday grid capacities for the following congested borders (in the below-mentioned trade directions):

  • Austria > Italy (Planning in progress)
  • APG > Switzerland
  • Switzerland > APG

The intraday trade on the Czech-Austrian border is conducted by the control area manager of the neighbouring country, i.e. CEPS.

The implementation of an intraday trade platform for both directions on the Hungarian border (Austria > Hungary and Hungary > Austria) is currently in progress. A corresponding link willl be established to this platform as soon as it is available.

The allocation of intraday capacities on the Austro-Slovenian border has been the responsibility of ELES alone since 5 July 2011. Registration is necessary. Further information can be found in the document Slovenia – Austria Intraday Capacity Access Rules.

There is no declared congestion on the German-Austrian border; hence, there is no trade restriction for the intraday market under normal conditions.

The distribution of grid capacities for the intraday trade to all borders and trade directions managed by APG are subject to the successful confirmation by the control area operator of the target area or source control area (matching), respectively.

Once intraday trade begins, information concerning the availability of intraday capacities can be obtained directly under the continuously manned telephone number: +43 (0)50320-53230.
The mandatory notification by telephone of intraday amendments is also carried out under this telephone number.

According to the said availabilities, there exists the possibility, in line with the "first-come, first-served" principle, for each balance group responsible to register the available intraday capacities by forwarding of an intraday schedule to APG.

The detailed development of the notification of intraday capacity usage is thus as follows:

  1. The application for capacities to APG via the balance group responsible
  2. The sending of the schedule to APG and the control area operator in the respective country by the balance group responsible. The time of receipt by APG is decisive as to who receives the capacities ("first-come, first-served").
  3. Matching with neighboring control area operator, taking into consideration point 2 and NTC.
  4. Sending of the confirmation to the balance group officer.

Organization of the intraday trade

The following description of both the organization and the conditions of the intraday trade is an excerpt from the authorized "Miscellaneous Market Regulations", chapter 3, page 13f from the Energy Control Commission or Energie Control GmbH, as the case may be. All further market regulations are applied accordingly.

"The intraday trade starts at 6.00 p.m. (D-1). Intraday schedules will be rejected if received by the control area operator prior to 6.00 p.m., D-1. Amendments made on the following day or at the end of the Day Ahead notification phase (2.30 p.m.), as the case may be, to schedules exceeding the control areas require a handling time of at least 45 minutes and may only begin on the hour. 20 minutes after the filing of the application, the control area operator is obliged to provide the balance group responsible with information as to whether the submitted amendments are feasible and that the target or source control areas, as the case may be, have been confirmed by the control area operator. An immediate stop will be applied to any programs (time series) demonstrating discrepancies (the previously matched program applies). Higher versions of schedule time series, demonstrating incorrect values for intervals in the past and handling period, will be rejected completely since a new version must correctly illustrate the entire day. The agreement process always occurs bilaterally between control areas. In Austria, schedule notifications for intraday amendments will be developed in the same format as Day Ahead schedule notifications. The "Process Type" A02 for intraday notifications is not supported. The process sequence runs along the lines of the Day Ahead notification. Intraday amendments must additionally be made known to the control area operator by telephone."

In rare cases, for technical reasons, there exists the possibility to also reject intraday schedules at borders with no declared congestion. For this reason it is our recommendation that you in any case equally inform yourself about the availability of intraday capacities for the trade directions Austria > Germany and Germany > Austria under the mentioned telephone number.

In any case, in accordance with the detailed market regulations listed above, each intraday schedule must be registered by telephone to the APG control area operator.
