The electricity shortage in the years following the war led to the nationalisation of electricity distribution grids.
It was the task of the Republic of Austria to rebuild and expand the electricity system.
The expansion of the grids was initially aided by the Marshall Plan.
The economic boom also came with an added demand for electrical energy. Along with that, expectations of the grids increased and more and more power transmission lines were built in higher voltage levels. The standard was raised from 220-kV-lines to 380-kV-lines.
With the accession of Austria to the European Union, the market deregulation first became of importance for APG.
The European Union passes a regulation that generation, transmission and distribution should be unbundled. In 1999, VERBUND-Austrian Power Grid GmbH was established.
2001 saw the renaming of VERBUND-Austrian Power Grid GmbH to VERBUND-Austrian Power Grid AG.
The first few years of the new decade are largely dominated by the construction of the two large-scale projects of Styria line and Salzburg line.
